A little lighthouse history to share on the tour
The first Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse was completed in July 1771. During the American Revolution, the beacon was darkened from 1774–1784, reflecting the strategic importance of nearby Fort William and Mary, later renamed Fort Constitution.
The present cast-iron lighthouse was built in 1878 and originally painted reddish-brown before being painted white in 1902. Lighthouse keepers remained at the station until 1948. In 2000, the American Lighthouse Foundation and Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse assumed stewardship of the lighthouse through a license with the U.S. Coast Guard.
2026 Update: After two seasons of being closed to the public, Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse is once again welcoming visitors—and we cannot wait to show you around.
A one-of-a-kind private experience combining lighthouse history, coastal scenery and eBike adventure.
